There has been much media about law and order in this pre-election period. More policing will never resolve the level of violence arising from a disengaged, unemployed, and overlooked cohort of young people who just can't find a way into a career and a chance in the community. With soaring unemployment in Melbourne's northern suburbs the federal government has supported funding for pre-apprenticeship training in recent years. However in the absence of apprenticeships, such training simply increases the costs to families and delays the inevitable unemployment for young people in the north. What is the ALP in Victoria doing to create real job opportunities for youth who are simply not cut out for university?
